When The Ringside Restaurant Remodeled They Called On Imperial Walk-Ins

Posted in Main by mmathews on 05/26 at 06:04 AM

The Ringside restaurant, a Portland, Oregon institution since 1944, chose Imperial Manufacturing for new walk-in coolers and freezers during their recent remodel.

Imperial designed and built four new walk-in coolers and freezers for the remodel that expanded the kitchen, added a new 40-seat dining room, added space for 10,000 bottles of wine, and refreshed the entire restaurant.

The Peterson family, the current third generation owner/partners being Craig and Scott, wielded a soft touch when it came to refreshing the dining areas, but they pushed for big changes in the kitchen, starting with an additional 2500 square feet. That new space came in handy when Imperial designed and built three new walk-in coolers and a new freezer. Along with the spacious standard walk-in cooler using dry air to maintain product freshness, there is now a large walk-in cooler devoted to humidity-loving fresh produce. Another, smaller, walk-in cooler dry ages meat using a special air curtain when the door is opened to maintain a very controlled temperature and minimal air flow, this helps age the meat in a predictable way. The walk-in freezer is small by most standards, The Ringside focuses on fine dining where fresh foods are the rule.

Three New Imperial Manufacturing Walk-in Cooler And Freezer Door Products

by mmathews on 11/18 at 02:06 PM

Imperial Manufacturing recently introduced three new products for walk-in coolers and freezers, and cold storage facilities. A new adjustable hinge is now available for walk-in coolers and freezers, and there are two new powered door operators for horizontal cold storage doors.

The Imperial Manufacturing adjustable hinge makes it easy and quick to field adjust a walk-in cooler or freezer door. This adjustable hinge provides both vertical and horizontal adjustment of 5/16” over 360 degrees. Both original installations and long term maintenance adjustments benefit from the ability to keep the door and hinge attached to the walk-in cooler or freezer while making the adjustments.

The new ICC-5 Cold Storage Door Operator adds a new level of ease to installation and programming, and combines this ease with Imperial Manufacturing’s reputation rugged design and reliable operation. The controller ships pre-mounted to the header and is pre-wired using quick-disconnect cables, which eliminates all the guessing in the field. Field connections take place at the circuit breaker and the programming can be quickly tested with the test button and temporary power before the electrician completes the wiring.

An economy door operator solution to controlling powered cold storage door operations is now available through Imperial Manufacturing’s ruggedized modification and use of the LiftMaster Model T door operator. Upgrading the bearings and other components gives the LiftMaster Model T the ability to safely move up to a 10x10-foot horizontal cold storage door. The easy programming and economy price combine with the ability to get nationwide service from experienced commercial door companies and deliver an unbeatable package for many cold storage door uses.

These three new products are just the latest evidence of Imperial manufacturing design and manufacturing creativity. Visit the Imperial Manufacturing web site for additional information on the best walk-in coolers and freezers available today.

Burgerville Makes Green News

by mmathews on 06/25 at 09:43 PM

Burgerville, one of our customers, was recently covered in the blog “The Green Bin”. Along with discussing Burgerville’s recycling operations and focus on “Fresh. Local. Sustainable.” food items, The Green Bin also covered how Burgerville makes an effort to use environmentally-friendly energy sources.

One portion of the story not covered by The Green Bin is how good Burgerville is at saving energy in the back of the house. Of course, Burgerville uses Imperial walk-in coolers in their back of the house operations and we work hard to make sure that these coolers are highly energy efficient.

It’s important to Burgerville to continue their environmentally-aware standards and walk-in coolers are no place to stop. Refrigeration counts for more than $1 brillion in expenses just in the U.S. According to the Energy Star program, simple upgrades to more energy-efficient components could save roughly 25% of the energy costs and also be the environmental equivalent to removing 475,000 cars from the road in the first year.

We are proud to contribute to the efforts Burgerville makes in being an environmentally conscious company and we are happy to have Imperial walk-in coolers be a part of those efforts.

You can read more about changes that bring greater energy efficiency to refrigeration on the rest of our web site and through an award-winning article we wrote for Foodservice Consultants Society International.

Carl’s Jr. Opens Green Flagship Restaurant

by mmathews on 03/14 at 12:05 AM

Imperial Manufacturing is proud to be recognized as an energy-efficiency leader by being chosen for Carl’s Jr. new energy-efficient restaurants.

CKE Restaurants Unveils Company-Wide Environmental Initiatives

Carpinteria, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Carl’s Jr.® today announced the opening of its new flagship restaurant in Carpinteria, Calif. Located two miles from the corporate headquarters of parent company CKE Restaurants, Inc., the new Carl’s Jr. location is an environmentally friendly unit where sustainability, conservation and energy efficiency will be measured and evaluated for potential company-wide implementation at both Carl’s Jr. restaurants and at sister-chain Hardee’s®. Some of the conservation efforts are already in use at both brands.

To honor the greening of the company, CKE Restaurants’ CEO Andrew F. Puzder will be joined by local dignitaries at a ribbon-cutting celebration held at the new Carl’s Jr., located at 4610 Carpinteria Ave., today at 10:30 a.m. PST.

“CKE Restaurants is an innovator V from our menu, to our service, to our marketing and our restaurants,” said Puzder. “With our ongoing emphasis on corporate environmental initiatives, we are demonstrating that we can be both a good neighbor and a financially sound business. Our current company-wide environmental initiatives are either cost neutral or result in a cost savings benefit, providing for a better planet while also contributing to the bottom line. The launch of our first green Carl’s Jr. restaurant, while not cost-neutral, will help us view our eco-friendly options in action.”

Green features of the new Carl’s Jr. flagship restaurant include:

  * Highly efficient ENERGY STAR rated equipment that has been tested and proven to use less energy than traditional or competitive brands;
  * Roofing material that is solar reflective and cuts heat absorption into the restaurant, thus reducing cooling needs;
  * A rainwater reuse system that collects for use during drier seasons;
  * A smart irrigation system that senses existing ground moisture and effectively determines how much to water landscaping;
  * An energy management system that is electronically controlled and allows for precise automated management of zone temperatures and lighting schedules; there are no light switches in the building, all systems are controlled electronically;
  * More efficient LED parking lot lights;
  * Construction with low-emitting material, including: adhesives and sealants, paints and coatings, floor systems, composite wood and laminate adhesives;
  * The installation of a catalyst which converts charbroiler particulate into carbon dioxide and water, reducing smoke, odors and emissions.

“Our commitment to the environment with this green restaurant is more than just lip service, it is a point of pride throughout the company and can be held up as an example for other businesses, that sustainability should be a top priority,” said Puzder. “For the restaurant in Carpinteria, we reused the existing shell of a former restaurant to reduce our construction footprint and even went so far as to install a hawk perch for a local bird that took up residence on the roof during construction.”

The new Carl’s Jr. flagship restaurant employs 50 full- and part-time staff.

Company-wide environmental initiatives are guided by a corporate Green Team under the direction of Chip Seigel, senior vice president, general counsel at CKE. The Green Team ensures that both the Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s brands, corporate offices and franchisees, are collaborating on environmental projects and sharing their successes along the path to sustainability.

“We have a long-term goal of zero waste in our corporate facilities and in our restaurants,” said Seigel. “The Green Team has been working on environmental issues throughout the company for several years and we’re pleased to announce some of those initiatives. Most importantly, we’ve worked hard to ensure our green initiatives were more than just a band-aid approach to efficiency and conservation, but rather a systematic review and implementation of these programs.”

Some of the CKE’s company-wide initiatives include:

  * Electronic communications - Paperless delivery of documents for annual shareholder information, Board of Directors meetings; Web-based, paperless operations and training manuals; electronic document delivery for contracting, as well as all internal communications; electronic delivery of paystubs to corporate employees;
  * Recycling - Used cooking oil at all restaurants is recycled for alternative fuel and other uses; More than 4,000 tons of cardboard was recycled at Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. units; ongoing electronic waste recycling programs;
  * Packaging initiatives - Paper products and food packaging items range from 5% to 80% post-consumer fiber; 100% recycled fiber carry out bags from post-industrial content will roll out to all restaurants in 2009;
  * Energy Conservation - ENERGY STAR equipment is used in all company-owned restaurants; CFL lighting replacement at all company restaurants; thermostats and occupancy sensors are being installed for ongoing energy savings; cool roof materials have been installed at corporate offices and new restaurants; GPS and route-efficiency software currently used on truck fleet to ensure the most fuel efficient delivery of products to restaurants.

New Energy Efficient Lighting Installed At Imperial Manufacturing Facility

by mmathews on 02/01 at 05:53 PM

Portland, OR - February 01, 2008 - In a continuing effort to be a front runner in energy efficiency Imperial Manufacturing has converted its production lighting system from metal halide lights to 4-lamp T5 high output high bay fluorescents. Imperial will see a return on investment of 87%, payback in 13 months, and percentage savings in kwh consumption of 61%.  All in a effort to contribute to a decreased dependency on energy.

What are the benefits of high-output T5s?
Switching from HID lamps to HO T5 fluorescent lamps is now a common strategy for increasing energy efficiency in warehouses and other high-bay lighting situations. Both HO T5s and induction fluorescents:

  • Are capable of instant-on and instant re-strike.
  • Can be used with energy-saving occupancy sensors.
  • Can be adjusted through dimming (with dimmable ballasts).
  • Have lower average mercury content than metal halide HID lamps.

What are the drawbacks of metal halide HIDs?
Metal halide HID lamps have several drawbacks, three of which are related to energy efficiency:

  • HIDs require several minutes to warm up. During this “re-strike” period, the lamps consume electricity but produce no usable light.
  • Metal halide HIDs cannot use energy-saving occupancy sensors, which automatically turn lights on when the area is occupied and off when the area is unoccupied.
  • Dimming systems for HIDs are on the expensive side and are not as efficient as those for fluorescent control systems, reducing the benefits of decreasing light levels during low-use periods to save energy.
  • In addition to these energy-efficiency factors, HID lamps can contain larger quantities of mercury compared with HO T5s and induction fluorescents.

Metal halide systems use one lamp per fixture. When a lamp fails it requires immediate replacement, since a failed lamp represents a 100 percent reduction in the illumination provided by that fixture. In an HO T5 system, there are four lamps, so when a lamp fails there is only a 25 percent reduction in illumination, allowing a facility to operate safely until it is convenient to change the failed lamp.

Bargreen Ellingson Opens Denver Office

by mmathews on 10/31 at 07:32 PM

Denver, CO - October 31, 2007 - Long a staple in the Pacific Northwest, Bargreen Ellingson has extended its presence into the Denver market with the opening of a three-person sales office in that city. Initially, the location will focus on contract sales.

While this marks the first time the company will have a physical presence in Denver, it’s not the first time Bargreen Ellingson’s done business there. “We have had projects down in Denver off and on for years that were handled by people from our other offices,” said Rick Ellingson, vice president of Bargreen Ellingson. “But we had an opportunity to pick up some people that live and have experience in that market, so this was a people-first kind of move.

“The goal would be to move to our more traditional model, but that will come some years later,” Ellingson added.

Randy Rutsay serves as general manager of the new Bargreen Ellingson office located at 12071 Tejon St.

Imperial’s Commuter Challenge

by mmathews on 09/07 at 05:45 PM

Portland, OR, August 22, 2007 - Continuing the trend toward a “green” company, Imperial Manufacturing participated in this year’s Carefree Commuter Challenge, organized by the Westside Transportation Alliance (WTA).  The challenge prompted employees of 160 participating companies to bike, walk, commute, or use public transit to work - anything but driving alone.

A total of 21 employees joined the 3,500+ other Portland area employees, successfully c’ommuting to work a total of six times during the month of July.  Great job to all those employees who participated!

After the results were tallied, the 160 total companies contributed to saving 441 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere by saving 44,864 gallons of gasoline.  Under current pricing, that’s $127,818!  Awards issued by the WTA to Imperial employees include Richard Schermerhorn (Mocha Roma Gift Certificate), Nicholas Stahl (Ben & Jerry’s Gift Certificate), April Skelton (Hot Lips Pizza Gift Certificate), and Rex Plombon (Ben & Jerry’‘s Gift Certificate).

For information regarding the 2007 Carefree Commuter challenge, visit the website www.wta-tma.org.  The event concentrates on raising awareness of alternative transportation, the increasing carbon emissions that lead to global warming, and personal fitness/wellness.  Imperial Manufacturing is proud to have not only participated, but expand the challenge over the month of August with its own Bicycle Challenge.

Taking the Wraps off of Thermosteel

Posted in Main by imperial on 08/22 at 07:03 AM

IMPERIAL TAKES THE WRAPS OFF OF THERMOSTEEL COLD STORAGE DOOR HARDWARE BACKING SYSTEM

Portland, OR - In May of 2007 Imperial Manufacturing unveiled a new insulated steel door backing system for mounting refrigeration door hardware. The traditional manufacturing method for fabricating steel door backing for refrigeration hardware calls for the steel backing to be mounted behind the exterior finished metal skin on the door frame. The door hardware is then to be attached directly to the exposed side of the exterior finished metal skin and attached directly to the interior steel door backing.

Steel door backing is the strongest and most durable method to mount refrigeration door hardware. One drawback to the traditional steel door backing systems are that the steel backing promotes premature corrosion through electrolysis when used with certain exterior finished metal skins, such as aluminum for example. Another condition is created through the conduction created between the two metals contacting one another in cold storage/ambient air conditions. The conduction between these two metals will cause it to sweat and eventually stain and rust the finish metal on the door and frame. This is usually referred to as “telegraphing.”

The ThermoSteel door hardware backing system incorporates the use of 1/2” thick Thermo-Lite ® insulated boardstock sandwiched between the cold storage door hardware and 10 gauge galvanized backing plates. The remainder of the cavity inside the door and frame sections are foamed in place with urethane foam. The Thermo-Lite® board acts as an isolator between ferrous and non-ferrous metals eliminating any chance for electrolysis to occur. The insulating value of the Thermo-Lite® inhibits conduction from cold transfer between the backing plates and the finished wall metals. This will eliminate any rust or corrosion from forming on the exterior finished wall metals. The Thermo-Lite® composite material is present throughout the entire door frame section and provides superior strength without the use of conductive materials attached directly to the door hardware.

Yellowstone gets a face lift

Yellowstone National Park gets a face lift behind the scenes.

Xantera, with Yellowstone National Parks, contracted Bargreen Ellingson for new, replacement and remodel the existing storage coolers and freezers to be ready for the 2007 season.

Xantera, with Yellowstone National Parks, contracted Bargreen Ellingson for new, replacement and remodel the existing storage coolers and freezers to be ready for the 2007 season.
Old Faithful Lodge was in need of replacing 3 storage rooms and remodeling one storage freezer; while Canyon village required the replacement of a storage freezer and the addition of a cooler freezer combo in the employee dining area. Kyle Hawkins from Bargreen Ellingson in Tacoma, WA and Todd Sillars from Imperial Manufacturing took to the site in December 06 to evaluate the site for phase 1 thru 3 at the three main camps.

Imperial Manufacturing shipped the boxes and refrigeration to the site in March to there installers from Pitman Enterprises and Bargreen’s refrigeration installer Tim’s Mechanical Plus. The project required approximately 4 weeks completing and cost was approximately $250,000 for Phase 1.

Still to come is phase 2 and 3 for the 08 and 09 season. This will include replacing the remaining boxes at Canyon lodge, replacing the remaining boxes at Mammoth lodge and adding two new boxes. One interior and one exterior, keeping in mind this is Yellowstone National Park. Snow load is not a problem for Imperial Manufacturing.

Spring Training and Spring Renovations

Posted in Main by imperial on 08/22 at 05:56 AM

Imperial contracted WW Commercial Refrigeration in Los Angeles to install the coolers and the Heatcraft refrigeration equipment and they did an outstanding job. This was not an easy install as they were only allowed to work in certain sections of the stadium at specific times.

Los Angeles, CA – TriMark Raygal of Irvine, CA was awarded the contract for the 1st of many phases in the renovation of the Dodgers Stadium in December of 2006.
The first phase included adding two new large beer coolers to level 3 of the stadium before the start of the spring season.

Rob Perry, the project manager for Raygal, George Perry, the principal foodservice consultant with Ricca Newmark Design in Greenwood Village, CO, and Rob Loucks from Imperial Mfg in Portland, OR all took to the task in late December 2006.

The stadiums unique design, the stringent codes and seismic requirements for Los Angeles, 1,600 lbs of beer pump equipment and condensing units that were to sit atop each of the coolers and the time constraints all played significant roles in the challenges that lay head for this team of professionals. They began working very closely with the architect, HKS Architects, Inc in Dallas, TX and Miller Consulting Engineers in Portland, OR.

The on site date was nearing and changes were still being made due to last minute field dimensions that were given. The design team at Imperial really stepped up to the plate, pardon the pun, when changes came in the day before this project was scheduled to be released to the production floor. They were able to make these last minute changes, clear it with the Engineers and still release it the next day.

Imperial contracted WW Commercial Refrigeration in Los Angeles to install the coolers and the Heatcraft refrigeration equipment and they did an outstanding job. This was not an easy install as they were only allowed to work in certain sections of the stadium at specific times.

Currently, Ricca Newmark is working on Phase IV of the renovations which includes new walk-in coolers and freezers for the field level concessions due to install before the Fall season kicks off.

Chemical Containment Chamber

Posted in Main by imperial on 08/22 at 05:53 AM

BASF needed to store flammable chemicals in a controlled environment. They approached Luwa Environmental Specialties for a solution. They in turn contacted Imperial Manufacturing to provide a warm room. Although the chemicals were to be stored at 40ºC the environmental chamber was to be outdoors in a high humidity area, so heat was needed on the doors to control condensation.

Since the chemicals being stored were flammable, the chamber needed to meet Class 1, Division 1 regulations and needed to be FM approved. It also needed to have blow out panels in the event of an accidental explosion. They also needed (1) emergency egress door and (2) 10’ x 10’ doors to allow forklift traffic, but they could not be sliding doors due to the potential to cause a spark. The required interior dimensions of the chamber were 31’ x 37’ 6” x 13’ at the lowest point, and the slab needed to have a slope for drainage of any spilled chemicals.
Imperial was able to meet all of the above criteria with FM approved high density urethane framed panels and double swing doors. Recirculated glycol was used in lieu of heat cables. The chamber was self supporting, utilizing internal posts and beams and girt support for the walls. A concrete curb was poured for the walls to sit on due to the site not being level. Imperial also provided the roofing and weatherproofing materials, and handled the structural engineering utilizing Miller Consulting Engineers, and the installation utilizing Pitman Enterprises.
BASF and Luwa Environmental Specialties were very pleased with the completed chamber.
